Review: Bandcamp / Soundcloud / Submissions Round-Up pt 11
Haven't done a round-up for a while, so here goes....
I'm digging the stuff that King Pizza are putting out, in fact I may have to devote a whole post to them soon, but in the meantime the split 7" with The Mad Doctors and Sun Voyager deserves some 'print' time. Sun Voyager's 'Ghost Valley' is a fabulously fuzzy foray into psychedelic stoner territory. The vocals are mixed down giving them a distant feel which allows room for the fantastic fuzzy guitar riffs to come to the fore...ace stuff indeed. 'Rusty Knife' by The Mad Doctors sees thing take a turn towards some ace dirty garage rock'n'roll. Again the riffs are blistering and the whole track has a Coachwhips via The Quadrajets vibe about it....except heavier....I'm lovin' it! It can be got via Bandcamp or the King Pizza website in a groovy white vinyl. It is also now available from this blog's shop Dayz of Purple.
West Of The Sun are a North London based "Psychedelic rock and roll five piece" who have a couple of self-released EPs under their belts. The beginning of May saw the release of the 'Siberian Hysteria' single on Phoney War Records. It has some driving psych guitar, almost bordering on surf and an incredibly infectious melody. On the whole it has a pretty cool psych/indie vibe that with flashes of 60s cool that bodes very well for a long player in the future. It can be purchased via iTunes and you can check out more of their material on their website.
Now, this good.....St Agnes release their new single, 'Sister Electric' in June via Death Or Glory Gang Records and what a stormer it is! Based very much in the blues, but in the same way Jon Spencer plays the blues...distorted, heavy and incredibly cool. The riffs are heavy and drenched in fuzz and the distant snatches of harmonica give this a vaguely ethereal Morricone vibe....and all this topped off with some great harmonised vocals from Kitty and Jon - great stuff indeed! 'Sister Electric' is released on June 17th and the limited edition lathe cut 7" clear vinyl can be pre-ordered on the band's Bandcamp page.
Moon Ra is no stranger to these pages, her split with Nicola Corti, 'E.S.P.', was reviewed way back in December here, and excellent it was too. The new one sees another split release, this time with Giulio Aldinucci via No Problema Tapes from Chile. 'Mutus Liber' is a voyage into musical alchemy and 'different ways of making music'. As with 'E.S.P.' this is a cassette of beauty via experimentation, full of drones, glitches and soft swathes of sound. The Aldinucci side is four tracks of sublime electronic drone that permeate through your consciousness and lull you into a blissful hypnagogic state...truly beautiful. The Moon Ra side is a live recording made at the Hundred Years Gallery in London and is probably more experimental but no less transcendant. The dense rolling waves of sound coupled with drones and manipulated tapes make this an aural mix of the great musique concrete pioneers and the Italian giallo composers like Bruno Nicolai and Piero Umiliani etc. Throw in some Basinski a la 'Disintegration Loops' and you have experimental music of the highest calibre. 'Mutus Liber' can be purchased via the No Problema Bandcamp site here.
