Review: A Bandcamp / Soundcloud Round-Up

One of the upsides to writing a music blog is the number of people proffering or suggesting music for review / opinion / shit'n'giggles so this is the first in a (hopefully) regular round-up of some of the music put my way by Twitter, Facebook, Email, carrier pigeon and Trystero (that last one is for any fellow Pynchon lovers).

So, first up are The Purple Sound Barrier via Soundcloud. I must admit I was a bit bemused on first listening to the material on their SC page, not quite sure what to make of it. However, after a couple of listens I really grew to like it. Standout tracks are 'You're Supreme' with it's nice little psych riff, 'Under Black Starlight' which has a medieval vibe (yes, really!) and 'Dark Day Approaching' which is a bluesy number with some great Bowie-like vocals. There are loads of tracks on their SC and the depth of variety and creativity is to be applauded - good work guys!

Millsted chuck out the brand of hardcore punk that soundtracked my formative, wild (well, 'less structured') days. Great stuff - politically savvy, bruising and damned enjoyable - check it out.

'Amanita' by The Everglows is a catchy slice of garage punk/pop with shades of new wave singer/songwriters like Costello and Jackson. Further investigation on their SC stream unveils a cracking collection of garage tunes earthed in the sixties but sounding fresh and modern.

Dirty Cakes Band have obviously been listening to their Nirvana records, and that's obviously no bad thing. Their 'Never Alone' EP released last year has definite shades of Aberdeen's finest, especially in the title track and 'Tombstone' and accomplished with some aplomb. The Grunge revival starts here!

Saving the best for last! Declan Randulph Owen - Astral Social Club Vs Bacon Industries. This is some good shit; psychedelia reminiscent of The Bevis Frond with some Velvet Underground overtones, although more electronic based rather than guitars. It has a lo-fi feel about it but that only adds to it's allure. I will deffo be investigating further.

That was only a small selection; apologies to those I've neglected or missed - no offence meant and no inference should be taken.
