Singles / Tracks of 2014

Whilst putting together the 'Best Albums....' post last week, it dawned on me that some of my fave tracks of the year did NOT appear on any studio LPs but as singles or compilation tracks, so, to that end, I give to you my fave tracks/singles of 2014..

10. The Magnetic Mind - Alone Again Or

This taken from the 'Forever Changing' compilation from The Active Listener, a tribute to Love's seminal 'Forever Changes' LP. This track from The Magnetic Mind is the first track - a psych pop cover with some groovy organ and treated vocals - Arthur Lee would approve.

9. Simones - Majic Ship

A single release from Fruits de Mer (if I'm not careful this whole list could be FdM!). A nice slice of psych with some fantastic Hendrix-like guitar

8. Elephant Stone - L.A. Woman

Taken from Cleopatra Records' 'A Psych Tribute To The Doors' - this cracking version of L.A. Woman manages to stay true to the original whilst updating it and making it a contemporary psych classic.

7. Lead Acid Battery - Sandworm

Taken from an digital LP I stumbled across on Bandcamp. I know very little about Lead Acid Battery except that come from Manchester and that this track is a masterpiece of a brainmelting psych guitar jam. At 25mins long it's a beauty. It can be found here

*addendum* - Have just been informed by Brett from Dead Sea Apes that Lead Acid Battery are a 'clearing house' for DSA!

6. The Chemistry Set - See Emily Play

From another Fruits de Mer release, this time the 'Momentary Lapse of Vinyl' CD sent to FdM club members chock full of Pink Floyd/Syd Barrett covers by contemporary bands. 'See Emily Play' has always been one of my fave Floyd tracks (indeed fave ever tracks) abd The Chemistry Set treat it with the reverence it deserves while still giving it their spin on it. Originally released on the 'Beyond The Wildwood' Barrett tribute.

5. Big Naturals - Krautpunk

Taken from the excellent 'The Reverb Conspiracy Vol 2' this is a great big dollop of garage-y heavy psych with plenty of feedback, it's better than coffee in the morning.

4. The Telephones - Hummingbyrd

Reviewed on this blog less than a week ago, this is a great slice of psych pop with a sixties West Coast vibe to it. Great stuff.

3. Astralasia - Brainticket

The Fruits de Mer annual this year was the 'Postcards from the deep' boxset (reviewed here)- a brilliant concept with some brilliant tracks and the standout for me was this Astralasia take on Brainticket's eponymous classic.

2. Superfjord / Earthling Society - Coltrane.

Yet another FdM release, this time the split 7" with Superfjord taking on John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' and Earthling Society reinterpreting Alice Coltrane's 'Journey in Satchidananda'. Two cuts of hypnotic, spacey, cosmic goodness.

And my fave track of the year is....

The Children Of Leir - Black Annis

Taken from the AA single, limited to just 100 copies (get it here). This is a hypnotic piece of West Coast inflected psych but with a distinctly dark and sinister feel to it. It feels comfortably familiar and yet disturbingly strange. I think they have just invented the 'Horror Psych' genre. Absolutely love this track
