Review: Fruits De Mer 7"s - The Chemistry Set / 'Coltrane'
So, as well as the sublime 'Postcards from the Deep' boxset, Mr Postman also brought me the two latest 7" offerings from Fruits De Mer: 'Elapsed Memories' from The Chemistry Set and the 'Coltrane' split with Superfjord and Earthling Society.
The Chemistry Set are veterans of the neo-psyche scene, having released their first material in the late 1980s, and all top quality top it has been, and this single is no different.
The title track is a gem of a power pop track; sunny and infectious and, in a fairer, more turned-on world, would be receiving some heavy rotation on the nation's airwaves. The flip side has 2 tracks - 'A Curse for the Inflicted Afflicted' and a cover of Our Lord Jimi Hendrix's 'Love & Confusion'. The first is the most robust track on the record - a more 'garage-y' feel to it. When I saw the track listing I foolishly assumed that the Hendrix cover was going to be a barnstormer of a freakout, but it is the most laid back track here and is beautiful! Sitars and tablas give it a nice psyche feel and is just sublime. As with all FdM products the packaging is ace - fantastic cover art by Serse Rodriguez, nice peach coloured vinyl and a poster to boot!
Anyone who has read this blog will know that I'm a huge fan of Earthling Society and so the 'Coltrane' split was a no-brainer purchase-wise. The A side is a version of John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' (one of my fave jazz tracks) by Finnish group Superfjord. It is a hypnotic, spacey take on the original, meandering in a psychedelic haze. You can pick out the original tune in places but I'm sure if John were still around he would spark up a fat one and nod his approval. I'm ashamed to say that I did not know too much about Superfjord but will be making a concerted effort to get up to speed soon.
The Earthling Society cover Alice Coltrane's 'Journey in Satchidananda' on their 'England Have My Bones' LP but this is a different mix - the Cosmic Joy mix - and never has a title been so appropos - it swirls and grows and hypnotises with its trippy goodness - awesome stuff.
The single comes with a 70min CD including 'A Love Supreme' remixed by Astralasia and a VHSHead remix of 'Journey in Satchidananda' - this really is the gift that keeps on giving.
