Review: Bandcamp / Soundcloud / Submissions Round-Up pt 10

Time for another round-up of submissions.

The Vryll Society will be releasing a new single; 'Self Realization' will be out on Deltasonic on March 11th and is a cracker. Artfully blending krautrock with psych pop and a splash of post-punk, 'Self Realization' has all that you need from a single - a solid motorik rhythm, chiming psych guitars and some esoteric howling in the background. The dreamy vocals, with the guitar, create an atmosphere that is hazily blissful but with frissons of exhilaration....a pretty damned good track! In the past the band have been compared to Spacemen 3, The Horrors, The Verve and The Stone Roses, but, on this showing, they have created a sound of their own and I, for one, eagerly wait for an album. The Vryll Society have a headlining tour in April:

April 6th BIRMINGHAM – Hare and Hounds

April 7th NEWCASTLE – Think Tank

April 8th GLASGOW – King Tut's Wah Wah Hut

April 9th MANCHESTER – Night and Day Cafe

April 12th LONDON – The Lexington

April 13th BRIGHTON – Green Door Store

April 14th BRISTOL – The Louisiana

April 15th SCUNTHORPE – Cafe Independent

April 16th SHEFFIELD – The Rocking Chair

'Self Realization' will be released on Deltasonic in March and can be purchased via the label site here.

Hellbirds are a band from Brooklyn who play a nice line of psych pop. 'Back From Black' is a track that they've submitted to the NPR Tiny Desk contest. It has some lovely guitar, straight out of the Raveonettes book of gentle fuzz, and a really strong rhythm section. For a young band they sound assured and confident and hopefully will get plenty of exposure; they have potential in bucketloads...good luck with the contest guys!. They tell me an album should be appearing in a few months, until then here's the video for 'Back from Black'...and it's well worth visiting their website to get a download of a Beatles/Beach Boys mash-up/covers album with guests including Christian Bland from The Black Angels...it's an intriguing and creative album.

Headless Buddha are a psychedelic rock act from Brazil. Formed in mid-2013 and so named after mainman Mauro Sanches accidentally dropped his little Buddha on the floor. The debut EP, 'Soul River' wowed the critics in Brazil in 2014 and so it was decided to go international with the release of the new single 'Black Hole', and that is very good news for us! It is a ace track, full of spacey synths, weird FX, crashing percussion and wailing psych guitar. The drums have a funky feel to them and really carry the track. Towards the end, things slow down and take on a sixties psych aspect. It is a great track and an optimistic precursor to the album, 'Homesick', which is out the beginning of March and is available to pre-order from the band's website here.

As some of you may have noticed, I do like a bit of experimental electronica, and it doesn't come any better than Somnoroase Păsărele . This Romanian duo have a new tape, 'Gama', out on Tymbal Tapes and is a truly immersive piece of music. Full of gorgeous drones, glitches and hauntological electronica. It is best listened to via headphones; the use of stereo is mesmerising. As a whole 'Gama' is a hypnotic, hypnagogic piece....not always an 'easy' listen but if you allow yourself to become immersed the rewards are plentiful...stunning! The tape and download are both available via the Tymbal Tapes Bandcamp page.

California based heavy psych outfit Queen Crescent have just premiered a killer new song/video 'Zodiacal Woman'. Described as "Los Dug Dug's meets Sabbath" the band released their self-titled album to rave reviews last year, and 'Zodiacal Woman' is set to be released on Who Can You Trust? Records compilation EP 'Sweet Times (Volume 5)'. The song is certainly redolent of Sabbath riff-wise and is as heavy as fuck. The addition of flute gives it a proggy element, but on the whole is a pretty damned fine slab of heavy psych.
