Ten Of The Best: Dave W from White Hills
A bit of a special 'Ten Of The Best' this time around. Dave W from everybody's favourite purveyors of fuzzed-out motorik spacerock White Hills, has very kindly provided a list of ten, very different but all incredibly cool, albums that have influenced him over the years. Cheers Dave!
"In putting together my "ten of the best", I decided to focus on albums that in some way have influenced my guitar playing, songwriting and/or gave me the desire to want to create music. They are all albums that I've spent years listening to and continue to inspire me to this day. I did not put them in any particular order as they all hit that special spot in me. Maybe some are familiar and others maybe not. It's a mixed bag. Enjoy!
There is one disclaimer I'd like to make about the list. It was hard for me to choose which album by Bauhaus I wanted to include. For me their entire catalog is seamless. I ended up going with their last album, since it's the one I listen to the most these days. This is probably their least known and most underrated album. Recorded and released after their last reunion. The title, "Go Away White", is nothing short of brilliant in my mind. For as they were born in the black, they end up leaving us in pure white light. Few could have done it any better."
Renaldo and The Loaf - Songs For Swinging Larvae
Jimmy Pursey - Alien Orphan
James Brown - Sex Machine Today
Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box
Jefferson Airplane - Bark
Bauhaus - Go Away White
Creation Rebel - Starship Africa
Funkadelic - Cosmic Slop
John Coltrane - OM
David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name
For those who have missed out over the years on White Hills vinyl (some of which are as rare as hen's teeth) the good news is that many are being repressed. Thrill Jockey are repressing the 'Heads On Fire' and 'White Hills' LP on limited runs, available here...but be quick, only 200 of each have been pressed! 300mics Records are giving the debut release 'No Game To Play' a repress in March...can't wait for that one!
